Slot Canyon- slot-like ravine incised into the sedimentary strata of the Mecca hills on the eastern fringe of the Coachella Valley. Several ladders have been placed at strategic spots within the canyon, either to assist or to make feasible passages over abrupt "dry falls" (dropoffs) along the bottom.
Painted Canyon- An artist's palette of soft pastels covers the earth's surface where rock outcroppings and mud stone have been displaced hundreds of years ago by the San Andreas Fault. Pink, red, gray, brown and green colors wash the hills and canyon walls creating a spectacular sight. This colorful canvas is called Painted Canyon, a high-walled, narrow gorge tucked within the 41,300 acres of the Mecca Hills Recreation Area of California.

DOG FRIENDLY TRAIL. Must clean up your pooch. It may be too difficult to get a medium to large dogs over the ladders. You will probably have to carry the dog on the ladders.

HIKE RATING:
Approximate length is 4 miles, with an elevation gain of about 250 feet. This is a moderate hike due to soft sand in the canyon floors, ladders, the elevation gain, and the duration of hiking time. It will take you 4-5 hours to complete the loop.
Moderate for hikers and difficult for non hiker that have not hiked more than 5 miles. Difficult for those who are afraid of climbing up or down on ladders or find climbing hills difficult.
WHAT TO BRING:
1. Dress in Layers. For the morning will start out cool and end up being warm .
2. Bring between 2 to 3 litters of water
3. Sunscreen
4. Cash for the driver if you carpool.

Del Taco across from Love's Gas Station in Coachella.
From Palm Springs/Palm Desert enter the 10 freeway heading east. Exit Dillion Road (last exit in the Coachella Valley). You must go under the 10 freeway and the Del Taco is immediately after the 10 Freeway on the left across from Love's Gas Station.

CARPOOLING
We will try to pair up as many people as possible. Always be prepared to drive, but if we can we will seek a ride for you. . Drivers should not have to pay for gas. Cash if you plan to carpool. Drivers should not have to pay for gas. The driver should be consuming about $15 in gas from Pilot Gas Station to hiking place and then back to Pilot Gas Station
